When you have no idea what to do...

Possibly the worst fear for anyone working on ambulances is when you get to a situation where you honestly do not know what to do. Fortunately usually the years of training and experience kick in and remind you and you get stuck in.

However you can always rely on the fact that joe public and his mother with no training or any idea of what they are talking about will always be able to give you sound advice should you completely fail to realise a plan of action.

For example today when taking a stretcher discharge home on arrival at the home I enquired with the relative as to where exactly I would be taking the patient and the answer I was helpfully supplied with was "In the house". Thank christ for compulsory education. With this nugget of information I was able to finally come to the difficult conclusion that I would have to walk past the relative and locate the receiving bed on my own.

But the help of the public doesn't end there. These pillars of society when asked if they would mind moving their car so I could reverse right up to the door nearest the room I was aiming for to maintain dignity and try and avoid bouncing a stretcher over gravel looked at me as if I had just fingerbanged their dead great grandmother whilst wiping my arse with their childs head.

I only hope that when I get old I can manage to raise children that are able to muster the same level of intelligence and common sense that these gifted individudals were clearly blessed with. Sadly I think in reality if my children grew up to be anywhere near the capability of these people a very late abortion would be on the cards. They trully would be an advert for euthanasia.
