Attitudes

I feel I could just post

http://member2.sja.org.uk/member/st-john-ambulance-blog/volunteer/plastic-paramedics.aspx

and explain to scroll down to Tom Daniels post and that would be enough. However I think I could possibly elaborate on how the lobotomised idiots post irritates me.

We should also have a big 'Volunteer' sticker. The public should not expect the same quality of service/professionalism as with an NHS Ambulance Service

Why the fuck not? Do not attempt to justify your ineptitude by hiding behind mantle of a volunteer. It is not an excuse that you are not being paid for being shit. A paramedic can volunteer with St John should they still carry the volunteer badge? Are they somehow less of a paramedic when they do it for free? Get a fucking grip.

This is why people use the term plastic paramedic. In between creating a rattling sound by shaking your head you obviously are perpetrating that you have some right to work at a poor standard. This is what people see and why you are exactly the sort of person who needs to leave the organisation for its reputation to improve.

St John Ambulance should NOT wear greens - Black and White is good (even though the design is indeed old fashioned) Choose Pink and Orange if you want us to be visible, I don't care - but definitely not the same colour as paramedics. I have the impression that people in favour of greens only want this so that they can act "as if" they were paramedics. The "new" uniform (if it ever comes out....) will continue the confusion...

Oh right so all NHS Ambulance staff are paramedics. Are they fuck. Green is generally accepted as identifying medical help. Paramedics are first aiders at their core (just very advanced ones with extensive medical training). Even control staff wear greens and it causes a grand total of ZERO problems. Thats one short of one for christs sake!

It is not about being paramedics. It is about being recognisable as help.

We should have a big "First Aid Tag" on the Hi Vis jackets - not just only "St John Ambulance" as the public may think we are qualified (which was what I thought before joining SJA)

We do have first aid on the jackets. More importantly though we are qualified as FIRST AIDERS. Just because you joined and were more overexcited than a paedophile working in santas grotto doesn't mean the rest of us share your one digit IQ (and your taste for children).

This isn't a case of somebody needing an attitude adjustment this is somebody who is dangerous to the progression and evolution of an organisation. Trying to justify poor standards and drag the organisation down to some kind of new low is exactly the sort of person who needs culling.

Spot on. I am the "other side" not SJA but agree fully with what you say. I personally take every opportunity to enhance my skills and, whilst I acknowledge I will never have the experience of a tech or para my aim is always to be as professional as I can, whilst working within my skill set. If skills beyond these are needed then I will happily call for back up. To my mind the patient experience should not be any different whoever treats them
